Yesterday, Barack Obama demonstrated once again that he is not serious about health care reform. Claiming his fundraising success as a kind of mandate for change, he delivered himself of the following groundbreaking insights:
The status quo is unsustainable … Standing pat is not an option … Failure to agree on changes to the health care system could be catastrophic ….
Wow! What a statesman. When reporters had the temerity to ask for something a little more specific, he produced the following howler:
Every four years presidential candidates trot out their plans, then nothing happens …
Presumably, this means he plans to go the “nothing happens” stage without bothering to “trot out a plan.” I guess that represents efficiency of a sort. Why waste resources on a plan when you know you’re not going to implement it anyway?
Obama did, however, offer the following teaser to the journalists and other dignitaries present at the fundraiser:
He’ll hold series of similar meetings to gauge public sentiment. He plans to offer a health care proposal in a couple months, he said.
I can hardly wait.
