NPI: A Case Study in Bureaucratic BS

If you are one of those people who believe that giving our masters in Washington full control over our health care delivery system will make things more efficient, I recommend spending a few minutes with The Angry Pharmacist:

Now everyone has to apply for a NPI number. That’s right, a NEW number that we all know ALL insurance companies will have installed flawlessly in their software so there will be NO slowdowns in processing.

NPI (National Provider Identifier) is redundant. As the seething pharmacist explains, pharmacies already have a NABP/NCPDP number and physicians have a DEA number. This new imperial decree adds no value.

In other words, it’s a bureaucratic solution looking for a private sector problem. This is what government does. It capriciously imposes unfunded mandates and red tape any place it can. It doesn’t matter if there is a real problem.

Are you sure you want these people to have control over the entire health care system?
