CUBAN HEALTH CARE IS AN OXYMORON

After covering the latest BS from Cuba on corpulent con artist Michael Moore, Michelle Malkin links to some great blogs that provide much-needed reality checks. These and other blogs are working hard to counter propaganda from various useful idiots concerning Cuba.

As it happens, one of my colleagues at the hospital is a Cuban-American whose father fled to the U.S. after Castro’s takeover. She has many relatives still there, and it is impossible to exaggerate the contempt she has for Americans who think Cuba’s health care system is superior to ours.

In her eyes, the only thing more despicable than Castro’s regime is the “progressive community” that continues to lie on its behalf.

Castro is an asshole, but at least they have doctors. At least they do not leave poor people in the cold.

The American system worships the free market, and laughs at families who go bankrupt due to illness. A public health care system is much better, only the United States and South Africa have private health care… I guess it is because they do not want to give health care to black people.

I think the Cuban system works pretty much the same way. There really is no such thing as “free” health care. In Cuba, Eastern Europe, the U.S., or wherever, someone has to pay. Either you pay the hospital or you pay in taxes or you bribe someone.

    Dear David,

I am from Hungary (”Eastern Europe”), My Mother is a Doctor, and has been for over 40 years from 1958 on. I must say, you have no idea what you are talking about. But if you can consider loaves of freshly baked poppy seed rolls and other baker goods, or a kilo bananas from Austria a bribe, then, and only then cold you be correct. She did accept items of the above nature. Michael Moore’s film is exposing your ill system, your lack of respect for each other and the total lack of care for each other.

    Yours, Andre

Ps: I am a US citizen now and have been for over 14 years, working in the Medical field. Michael Moore is correct and I applaud him in exposing this sick life of the US of A.

Andre, I edited out your last few passages because the profanity and personal insults are not appropriate for this forum.

As to your response to David, I have one question: If “this sick life of the US of A” is so difficult to bear, why do want to be citizen?

I am not here for the government but your people and country. Love both. Your (our) government is criminal and an insult to all who put their sincere trust in them. Never criticize your immigrants, they raraley trust the government and for good reasons. I already watched “Sicko” and the unfortunate truth is, that it is true. I live and work in it every day, and have to cheat the system in order to help some of my patients so they are not turned away/kicked out into the streets - IT DOES HAPPEN, AND IT HAPPENS OFTEN! I take patients from the waiting room whom I suspect having no insurance, no means to pay. I give them care, I give them medicine to take home. I saw them, their kids up. They are Americans. Your people, my people now. Guess what’d happen if I’m ever caught…? Don’t knock Michael Moore because you can’t stand him, knock him if he is incorrect. But if he tells the truth, stand up and have some guts to back him up. It is your interest. There are very few doctors, nurses who can afford to risk their profession, their livelihood. I won’t last long I know it. The profanity is wrong, but not unreasonable. Sometimes you need a well aimed kick in the ass to get you moving or at least wake you up from your comfort. So stop talking and do something for your people and your country!

No, Andre, Moore isn’t telling the truth. I have worked in health care for more than 2 decades, and I know what is and isn’t wrong with the system. Moore does health care and his country a great disservice by painting such an inaccurate picture.

Facts on government policies, Insurance company practices, and experience proves otherwise.
BTW, my next door neighbor’s son is married to a Canadian girl. The whole family has been going across the border for anything and everything realted to medical care. They are not immigrants like me, they are born Americans. They love the US, but thinking about moving to Canada as they are getting older. This country cares less for them than Canada does. They’ve had US health insurance all their lives and have been refused or rejected services by the insurance companies time and time again. Yesterday I treated a young man who had insurance, but the insurance company will not cover his work related injuries. I treated him anyway, and will go to his house for check-ups. If he needs surgery, he’s in deep shit. The incidents I’m telling you about are just a drop in the bucket… The word “social” is a friendly word and action if practiced with sincerity Catron. It’s not a disease, but the US govmnt. has painted it that way because it didn’t serve their selfish purposes. I feel, if they paid as much attention to this country as they pay to destroying other countries, the US would have the highest literacy rate, and the highest quality health care. As it is, we are one of the last ones in the World. I hope you do some research on other copuntries, on history, and the present government before stamp your feet. It’s NOT about Michael Moore, it’s about our country, our people. It’s about you, your family, and other’s. He is far from perfect, and as all of us he has and will make more mistakes in his life and works. But at least he does something about issues that bother him, and he does it in a way that affect a very large number of people as opposed to the ones who bitch and complain and point fingers, but do nothing, but mouth off. And that is the majority of the human race. Congrats Caltron, you are part of the majority. Having said that, look back in history what the majority have achieved in History. You can start in Austria, say with the nazis. They have organizations World wide now… Believe me Caltron, the US is a bully, but a minority and at the end they’ll either cause destruction of the World or they’ll face economic and social disasters. BUt since they never admit to any wrongdoing, let alone face problems, they’ll opt for destruction = bullying. Again, congrats. In the meantime I’ll continue to cheat the system and if by chance one of your family members happen to have a problem with insurance companies and have an accident in the same time, I’ll be happy to treat them with the kindness I learned under a social communist regime. Meanwhile you can waste some more time hating Michael Moore instead of doing something worthwhile that actually helps others. Cheers, Andre

    Dear All,
I apologize for my intrusion in your communication. Until I read Jill S’s article I haven’t realized your forum was not in the benefit of THE People, but to bash Michael Moore. I had to realize that you are not here to make this country a better place, but to talk about Mike making money and question his sincerity. My apologies again, seems I am an ignorant man.
Please do go on at least as long as you are only talking you are not doing anyone any good.
From now on I’ll stay away. Sincerely, Andre

Hej folks I think it was some interesting remarks on the issue. Im lucky to not live with the US health care system here in Sweden. Michael Moore is a brilliant filmmaker and claiming that his facts isnt right is all ok when you provide correct numbers instead. Andre is a doctor and you Catron are you a doctor too ? Its interesting to see that 2 americans that worked in the same system come to different conclusions.

    Good Afternoon All,
I live in the US, not a doctor, just your average Joe. I’m not going to get into the hardships of my family and myself despite the Insurance, etc we pay, but I’d like to ask a question from Catron that goes back to the beginning of this discussion that Catron wrote and I quote:
“I think the Cuban system works pretty much the same way. There really is no such thing as “free” health care. In Cuba, Eastern Europe, the U.S., or wherever, someone has to pay. Either you pay the hospital or you pay in taxes or you bribe someone.”
If your hospital is not for profit, then please explain to me what you were trying to say with the above comment?
And if you are working in a not for profit hospital, may I call it Socialist, as it is a wonderfully social gesture that you and your fellow workers do?
And if I may, then please someone tell me what is wrong with what Mike suggests; other countries’ social health care as opposed to our government sponsored insurance piracy, and mistreatment of the public? And Catron, my hat is off to you Sir for working for a nonprofit hospital. But why work there if you feel the other hospitals where you have to pay are a better system?
I realize I’ve been asking many questions, but I’m confused why so many hate Mike when he simply points out the positives of other and the negatives of our country’s health care. Andre said it right; we have to do good, not just criticize and talk. Sorry for the long speech.

    Good Evening,
Catron; You work in a not for profit hospital in the finance dept?
Quote: “Either you pay the hospital or you pay in taxes or you bribe someone” Which payment method did your hospital opt for?
Don’t you think a doctor has a closer and more intimate understanding of human suffering, needs, necessities, or lack of than you do? A doctor who’s family comes from medical bckrnd?
As for Cuba; I am Cuban. I am a Cuban doctor. Forgive me but Andre and Mr. Michael Moore sound very accurate in their descriptions. I live and work in the USA now. As a doctor. Do you think I’d have a fair idea of the differences????!!!!!!!

Catron, as an outsider looking in, I see that you’re simply bitter and angry that someone has a movie that shows a solution to a big crisis and you’re still stuck with making so many excuses about the original problem.

I also see your strategy behind your point. Using fear is a good method to intimidate others into not wanting such a solution and seeing the flip side of the coin. But why use the negative to justify not having the positive? Aren’t we the Americans who are at the forefront of innovation - or are we too stupid to decide how to design a system that would work for the greater good of everyone that we’ll just end up like the victims of socialized health care systems that we fear?

There’s good and bad in everything. You can see it how you want and Sicko shows the good in the Cuban system. Something that people here in American should hope for because the system in America isn’t perfect either. Does the good in the Cuban system outweigh the bad in the American system? Before you answer that, why are you judging anyway? Who made you the expert?

Stop being so bitter. It’s just a solution. If you come up with one and would like to sell the idea, find your own creative ideas to present it and hopefully you can even go so far as to make your own movie about it and present it to the American public.

Stop putting spin on other people’s ideas. It makes you look like a total loser. Especially if you use fear to make others disregard or devalue it.
