Hillary and the Health Proposal that Ate Detroit

Over the weekend, the citizens of Motor City heard the distant rumble of a ravenous dragon tramping toward their city.  Clinton, speaking to a UAW meeting on Saturday, announced that she has a ‘win-win’ proposal for the U.S. auto industry:

U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday offered a double-barreled campaign message for the struggling U.S. auto industry: accept tougher fuel economy standards in exchange for federal help with the costly burden of retiree health care.

Typically, the Senator from New York “did not specify how that government guarantee could be structured or funded,” but she did make it clear that her “offer” was not really optional:

Clinton said the U.S. automakers would have to accept the changes, but said in exchange the government could also help offset the retiree health care costs seen as the ailing industry’s single biggest liability.

Now the people who run the American auto industry know how those hapless residents of Tokyo felt when Godzilla showed up for dinner.
