SWIFTBOATING OBAMA

For anyone still credulous enough to believe that Paul Krugman’s recent attack on Barack Obama was about health insurance mandates, here’s a wake-up call. In a “memo” to Obama, longtime Clinton henchman Lanny Davis writes:

Sen. Clinton is right and you are wrong. Her health care proposal provides for a universal mandate, and yours does not and leaves out millions of people. That is a fact. As Paul Krugman …

Davis then goes on to quote Krugman at some length about Obama’s various sins. If that doesn’t convince you that the Krugman/mandate kerfuffle is a put-up job, read this segment from an open letter to caucus voters by Iowa governor Tom Vilsack:

Barack Obama’s health care plan, which he often calls “universal,” would actually leave as many as 15 million people without health insurance … But don’t take my word for it. Read the opinion of Paul Krugman …

The irony is that many of the nutroot bloggers who so vehemently denounced the “swiftboating” of John Kerry are gleefully piling on. A few examples can be found here, here, and here. Ron Chusid, with whom I normally disagree on pretty much everything, has good post on this phenomenon.

As I wrote the other day, this is not about mandates.
