A FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE ON HEALTH CARE

Writing in the Boston Herald, Michael Gerson succinctly sums up the essential difference between John McCain and Barack Obama on health care. It’s all about “the vision thing”:

There are really only two visions of health care reform: using government to increase private insurance coverage, or using government to provide health care on a larger scale. McCain takes the first approach. Obama takes the second.

John McCain believes in the market and Obama believes in government. Neither is an absolute purist. McCain is certainly no libertarian and Obama is not totally against the market.

However, considering the mess that quasi-government operations like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have made of the mortgage industry (not to mention the economy in general), I think McCain’s bias is healthier.
