Since Rahm Emanuel is Barack Obama’s first appointment as President-elect, and has a personality strong enough to be a real influence in the new administration, it seemed useful to take a look at his attitude on health care reform.
Emanuel produced a Democrat version of Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America” prior to the 2006 congressional election. “The Plan: Big Ideas for America” suggests that he’s pretty pragmatic:
Mr Emanuel thinks coverage can be extended to all American children. But he concedes that a nation as individualistic as America will probably never accept a European-style national health service.
Presumably, this is a lesson he learned as a foot soldier in the losing Hillarycare battle. It will be interesting to see how this kind of pragmatism works in an administration blown in by a “righteous wind.”
