PAYING FAT PEOPLE TO WALK?

When government apparatchiks run the health care system they do this kind of stupid crap:

Overweight parents will be paid to walk their children to school under plans to tackle the obesity epidemic.

This is Britain, of course, where the same idiots deem certain cancer drugs too expensive. But they have all kinds of money for the lard asses:

The scheme is part of a £30million drive to improve health which will begin next year in Manchester.

This kind of stupidity is endemic to government bureaucracies. Bureaucrats screw up everything they get their hands on.

And the more control they are given over health care, the worse the system will be. It’s inevitable.

If we can show that say £10 million spent on them saves £100 million on treating obesity related disease who are you to say it’s not money well spent?

Ultimately, it’s your emergency rooms that will be picking up the heart attack victims - so you’ll be paying more. Do you think that’s good business? And is there no role for any public health programmes whatsoever?

First, that’s a huge “if.” They certainly haven’t produced an ROI analysis that passes the laugh test.

Second, there is very little chance that such a program will actually reduce obesity in any significant way.

So, while forcing cancer patients to do without needed medication, your brainless bureaucrats throw money away on this crap.

    It’s stupidity gone to seed.

So these rotund individuals are going to be paid to walk. So, how is this going to be verified? Are the local Bobbies going to have to monitor this too? This idea sounds ripe for fraud. I hope there isn’t a McDonalds on the way or this program will be for naught.

Sorry, but your responses are inadequate. We’re in real danger - the US more so - of turning out a generation of children who will live less long than their parents. And your response is …. do nothing and watch hospital bills soar. If you actually read about these schemes, no one is ‘giving them money’ as such, but vouchers for the gym and for healthy foods. I’m sure there are similar schemes in the US, as many of the UK’s health promotion projects are based on American ones.

Marc, I’ve never heard of anything like this in the States, and it’s seriously becoming amusing how deliberately misinformed you are about things like this.

Huh? There are thousands of health promotion projects in the US (eg a federal project is Steps to a Healthier US), many aimed at tackling obesity, and indeed some include financial incentives of some sort, not least from your health insurers, but also in food stamp programmes. I’m amazed that an American - of all people - would find it odd that people aren’t motivated by money.
