The CBO is catching all manner of Hell for having the audacity to do its job. Prominent among the math-is-hard crowd is Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi:
It’s always been a source, yes I will say frustration, for many of us in Congress that the CBO will always give you the worst case scenario.
In other words, if you have 2 apples in a sack and then add 2 more, you have arrived at the “worst case scenario” of 4 apples in your poke. Can this idiot really be the Speaker of the House?
Sorry, Nancy, but the price tag matters to the folks who foot the bill. Jonathan Cohn is usually wrong about health care, but he makes a good point at The Treatment:
Universal coverage will rise or fall based on the money. And right now, I worry, falling seems all too plausible.
Yep. There is no such thing as free health care. Someone has to pay the bills. Here’s hoping that Douglas Elmendorf can, unlike his predecessor, resist selling out.
