In the months leading up to the Republican congressional victory in 1994, Beltway Democrats and their toadeaters in the “news” media kept dismissing the opposition as a bunch of fringe nutburgers.
And that is precisely how President Oblarney’s supporters in the establishment media and the blogosphere are treating today’s demonstrators in D.C. Andrew Sullivan provides a case in point:
This is as sick as those who called Bush a Nazi before the Iraq war. But unlike the Iraq war, the proposal for universal healthcare was a big issue in the last election, was widely debated, and the winners of that election are fulfilling a clear pledge. So what we have here is unhinged hysteria.
No, this isn’t sick and it isn’t unhinged. As a candidate, Obama seeemed reasonable. He claimed, for example, to be against an individual mandate. He has now reversed himself on that and many other issues.
This flip-flopping has caused many voters to conclude that the president is a charlatan. Thomas Sowell speaks for many when he describes the president as a first class con artist:
“Hubris-laden charlatans” was the way a recent e-mail from a reader characterized the Obama administration. That phrase seems especially appropriate for the Charlatan-in-Chief, Barack Obama, whose speech to a joint session of Congress was both a masterpiece of rhetoric and a shameless fraud.
But Sullivan, like so many supporters of the president, has ignored hundreds of thousands of reasonable voters with sensible concerns and focused on a few irrelevent oddballs.
But today’s march on Washington wasn’t carried out by a collection wackos. And, if the Dems write them off as such, they will be shellacked in 2010 just as they were in 1994. Dems, ignore these people at your peril:

Oh America, if only you knew how the world shakes its head at your breathtaking stupidity.
If only you CARED about your fellow man enough to feel that nobody should die a senseless, preventable death. If only you CARED about the rest of the world enough to notice that you are the only industrialized country that does not provide medicare for all to make sure of this.
If only you were intelligent enough to recognize that private health insurance is a multi-billion dollar industry that makes a considerable profit by charging you and your employers for your insurance, then cutting you off the first chance they get as soon as you’ve had a serious illness. …so that those most in need of insurance don’t get it.
If only you were smart enough to realize that your emotions are being exploited by this billion-dollar enterprise … not because public healthcare is bad, but because public healthcare will cost these crooks billions in premiums.
Fortunately, America, I’m not you. I live in another industrialized nation. It hardly matters which one, because all of us - every one of us - has universal health coverage. …. and there has been no sign of Hitler or the devil incarnate or anything else.
No America, when I see you calling your president Hitler and the Devil for wanting to heal people, it is in YOU that I see something truly evil.
You may have enough weapons of mass destruction to defend yourself against the most powerful of enemies. But clearly, nobody can stop you from killing yourselves.

There are not many of you, and your paranoid fantasies don’t make much sense, so maybe you should just try screaming louder.

The conservative movement in this country is dead and its coffin remains sealed as long as the tactics continue to be so ridiculous. Thank you, Fox News, for keeping the fish in the center of the barrel. Stupid and irrational argument is the only method the conservatives have left to make their “point”. Stupidity is inherently unable to support itself. As long as we can continue to keep our heads about us, we can ensure that the nonsense of the past eight years is not repeated.
Thank you to all those who are talking back to the scared little bunnies. May I suggest that we also try to calm them down. They are not going to be persuaded by sensible reasoning until they are able to reason them selves.
Murdoch - well said. Rest assured that there are MANY of us in this country who are well-aware of the stupidity of the lunatic fringe pictured at that event yesterday. They have no idea how much they are being manipulated by those who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. The U.S. health care model is rapidly collapsing, and it is time for those of us with a sense of reason to hold firm against this shrinking minority driven by paranoia and manipulation.

Only the brave should live in the US. as the US government has no nationalized food distribution system, no nationalized housing system, no nationalized system for clothing,, no nationalized system for water, no nationalized system … (post 4 point is) nobody cares? Really If you are sick do you not get treatment today, If you are hungry would a church not give you food, If you are homeless can you not find a shelter? Namely: the current healthcare system in the U.S. is already a bloated and ineffective bureaucracy of monumental proportions. It is already the nightmare that so many on the right claim a “government run” healthcare system would be.
The difference between the current bureaucracy and a government bureaucracy is that at the very top of the current system is a profit-seeking managerial apparatus that, by its own admission, seeks ’shareholder value’ (and incidentally, its own enrichment) over optimal public-health outcomes.
