Sullivan advises his readers that 1 in 3 Prius-owning households also owns an SUV. This, I think, provides a perfect metaphor for contemporary progressivism.
These people obviously don’t give a rat’s ass about what might be termed “the ethics of carbon gluttony.” They buy a Prius for one reason: to propitiate progressive piety.
This, by the way, is why many of these same people voted for Barack Obama last year without having any real idea what his true policy positions were on any of the big issues.
A vote for him assuaged the guilt they felt for hiding out in whitebread enclaves like Vermont and the Pacific Northwest, where the only people of color they see appear on TV.
In other words, like the purchase of the token Prius, a vote for Barack Obama allowed them to forgive themselves for moving to places where they won’t encounter actual black people.
This is also, as I have suggested before, why what I shall henceforth term “Prius Progressives” favor government-run health care. It’s just another way of projecting the illusion of personal virtue.
