AARP RUNS CYA AD CAMPAIGN

Last week, I wrote a post about AARP’s complicity in Obama’s planned destruction of Medicare Advantage, a very popular program among the organization’s own members.

AARP’s obvious conflict of interest got a lot of play in the blogosphere and a variety of other conservative media, and this apparently produced an angry backlash.

So now the organization has produced an ad series that tries to get the toothpaste back in the tube. Now, it seems they really care more about their membership than cash flow:

These ads will send a message to Congress and the President that while we will support proposals that ensure our members and future generations have the health coverage they need, we will fight with the strength of our 40 million members against any proposals that will cut their benefits or increase their out-of-pocket costs.

Uh-huh. Well, all AARP has to do to prevent an increase in out-of-pocket expenses for its members is to come out against the dismantling of Medicare Advantage planned by the Dems.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for the organization to “send a message to Congress and the President” that gutting MA will force millions of seniors back on traditional (more expensive) Medicare.

UPDATE:

Professor Jacobson has a good post on the AARP’s true agenda, as evidenced by the townhall it sponsored for Patrick Kennedy and its continued support for Democrat health care “reform.”

The role of AARP in supporting Democratic party proposals has received some attention, but not nearly enough. AARP presents itself as a neutral organization interested in the welfare of seniors, but in fact, AARP has extensive financial interests in promoting its affiliate insurance plans.

AARP uses the money it makes from seniors (on nearly worthless insurance policies) to promote a political agenda that actively seeks to undermine the interests of AARP members. What a scam.
