SARAH PHOBIA, PARTIE DEUX

Fear of Palin is not limited to our progressive friends. Its noisome presence can also be detected in the precincts of the GOP establishment. Sullivan quotes the architect of John McCain’s recent defeat:

My honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate for president and if she was the results would be … catastrophic.

Oh really? More catastrophic than deliberately sabotaging the one hope the Republicans had of prevailing last year? The campaign that Schmidt ran was dead on its feet until Palin appeared.

When she appeared, it seemed possible (for a moment) that the undead thing could actually be resuscitated. But then McCain’s people deliberately undermined her.

And who was behind the sabotage? Steve Schmidt. This is obviously a pre-emptive strike. He is very likely to be hammered in Palin’s upcoming book. As Allahpundit puts it:

Despite his denials, he and Nicolle Wallace have always been prime suspects in the leaks aimed at her by unnamed McCain staffers, thanks in part to tense campaign-era e-mail exchanges between Palin and Schmidt having magically appeared in print a few months ago.

Lots of establishment Republicans want Palin to go away. Like the good old boys of Alaska’s GOP, they like their comfy positions and they don’t much care about the voters.

They, like the good old boys up north, are in for a rude awakening.
