One of the reasons Republicans struggle in the public opinion polls is that most of them talk like sleepy accountants. Here’s Tim Pawlenty giving his opinion on the egregious Pelosi health “reform” bill:
Well, I think both in detail and in philosophical direction, I think that it’s a very misguided piece of legislation. I think this effort is going to go down in history as one of the biggest bait and switch tactics in modern political history. You have a promise that we’re going to tackle costs and make health care more affordable. I think this bill and the Senate counterpart are going to spend more government money — not less. It’s going to cost premium payers more — not less. And it’s a big deception.
He’s absolutely right, of course, but this kind of verbiage puts people to sleep. Republicans have got to learn how to move the dial. Here’s Sarah Palin saying exactly the same thing:
With Congress poised to overhaul one-sixth of our economy with so-called health care “reform” (which is really a government takeover of health care) …
It’s not enough to be bright and right. You must make people listen.
UPDATE:
Here’s Pawlenty (via Hot Air) tap dancing around the question of moderation in the GOP. He won’t answer a simple question about Olympia Snowe. He’s a good man, but he’s too damned careful. The voters don’t reward caution:
