Rarely mentioned in the interminable debate over the “public option” is the effect it will have on the availability of primary care. The following cartoon by Lisa Benson brilliantly illustrates what actual patients will experience once they are herded onto to the public plan:
No matter how many lies the Dems tell, the public plan will pay Medicare rates. The result of that Soviet-style reimburement scheme will be that many physicans will refuse to treat public plan patients, just as they now decline Medicare patients. At present, 18% of Medicare patients have no PCP.
So, as the President says, you will be able to keep your doctor if you like. The problem will be finding him in the health care labyrinth that will be created by what the Democrats call “reform.”
