Paul Hsieh has a good piece in the Washington Examiner discussing the mafia-like features of the recently passed House “reform” legislation:
Suppose the mafia came to your town and forced everyone to purchase all their meals at mob-approved restaurants. The mafia would also select the menu items …
Sound far-fetched? Hsieh goes on to explain that this is precisely how Speaker Pelosi and the President have designed their health care bill:
The recently passed Pelosi plan is essentially a national version of the failing Massachusetts system of mandatory health insurance … Under any system of mandatory insurance, the government must necessarily determine what constitutes an “acceptable” plan.
But what if you’d rather skip the expensive entrée, and just have a salad or a bowl of soup? Well, that’s where the “can’t refuse” part comes in:
Massachusetts residents must purchase numerous benefits that they may neither need nor want, such as in vitro fertilization, drug abuse therapy and chiropractor services. If you’d rather purchase low-cost catastrophic-only insurance without those options, tough luck.
The idea behind this Massachusetts insurance mandate and its counterpart in the Pelosi bill is to make sure there are no “free riders.” Unfortunately, even if this didn’t violate your rights as a free citizen, it doesn’t work. Massachusetts still has plenty of people who refuse to buy insurance.
The House “reform” bill attempts to avoid this problem by fining anyone with the temerity not to buy government-approved health insurance. And, if you fail to pay the fine, you can go to jail. Speaker Pelosi was recently asked if this provision was fair and her answer was an unequivocal yes.
In other words, Pelosi and her accomplices at the White House are going to offer you some insurance, and it would be wise to accept their generosity.
