It may well be that Joe Lieberman has single-handedly saved U.S. health care from a “reform” bill that would have wrecked the system. But, because of his apostasy on the public option and Medicare expansion, he has become the primary target of the daily Two Minutes Hate held by the Democrat-Media Complex.
Like Orwell’s Party members, who were required to attend the daily ritual and denounce designated public enemy Emmanuel Goldstein, the Democrats, the “news” media and the “progressive” bloggers have been heaping abuse on Lieberman. I’ve discussed Ezra Klein’s slander, but his wasn’t unique. Here’s Lee Siegel:

Slightly less offensive is Andrew Sprung:
Joe Lieberman has emerged as the Sarah Palin of the health care reform debate … He’s just thumbing his nose at the very notion that informed debate can shape the legislative process.

That Joe Lieberman would rather kill health care reform than let some consumer choose between competing public and private plans isn’t exactly new.

And so it goes. The Democrat-Media Complex needs an enemy upon whom to focus the anger of its increasingly frustrated constituency. Recently, Sarah Palin has been the chosen target, but for now Lieberman has taken her place. Joe is the Emmanuel Goldstein at whom the Two Minutes Hate will be directed for a while.
