There has been a lot of talk about the Dems passing Obamacare before seating Scott Brown, but a Republican win in Massachusetts would signal such a dramatic mood change in the electorate that this contingency is unlikely. That’s what Barney Frank was getting at today when he said:
If Scott Brown wins, it’ll kill the health bill.
Congressman Frank wasn’t talking about “the 41st vote”:
Losing the Massachusetts race presents a nightmare scenario for Democrats, many of whom would want to pass the legislation before Brown is seated. But Democrats would face an onslaught of criticism from Republicans, as well as cold feet from rank and file.
The “cold feet” is what Frank was alluding to. If Brown wins, rank and file Dems will read that victory as a vote of “no confidence” on Obamacare, and many will head for the tall grass. The leadership is threatening reconciliation but these people won’t fall on their swords for Obama.
