VA REJECTS INDIVIDUAL INSURANCE MANDATE

Virginia has become the latest state to reject the individual insurance mandate much beloved of Washington Democrats. The interesting thing here is that Virginia’s legislature is dominated by Democrats:

Virginia’s Democratic-controlled state Senate passed measures Monday that would make it illegal to require individuals to purchase health insurance, a direct challenge to the party’s efforts in Washington to reform health care.

Inside-the-beltway Dems have attempted to portray Republican opposition to the mandates as just another contrarian stance by the “party of no.” It’s a little difficult to portray Virginia Democrats in that light:

But the action in Virginia, a state that backed Obama in 2008, could indicate that the president is failing to reassure members of his own party that current reform efforts remain worthwhile.

In other words, the individual mandate favored by congressional Dems and the President (who claimed to be against it during the 2008 campaign) is not just unconstitutional, it is bad politics.
