‘One of the biggest problems, if not THE biggest, facing this country is partisanship, which is a primitive us-versus-them mindset that encourages politicians and citizens to focus on “beating the other teamâ€? (tribe) rather than on resolving problems.’

No – you have this the wrong way round unless you plan to abolish politics, which is precisely about struggle and conflict between interest groups. In the US this is obviously between the wealthy and the huge numbers of low income people and the gross inequality in American society. The former won’t give anything away unless the latter make them.

The reason this is absurd is because The Nation, being a progressively-minded media outlet, should understand that we need MORE experience and intelligence in politics, not less. The fact that Al Franken is/was a celebrity is irrelevant.

So now The Nation wants to encourage the primitive mindset of celebrity worship?

Really foolish.
