Here’s yet another reason for the GOP to stick to its guns on health reform. A convincing majority of Americans agree with them that Congress and the President should start from scratch on health reform:
Of the more than 2,500 people surveyed from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1, 57 percent agreed with a statement that Congress should start over — which is exactly what Republicans are demanding and what President Barack Obama insists he will not do.
The public is also ill-dosposed toward a general overhaul of the U.S. health care system:
Moreover, 56.4 percent of people indicated they would prefer Congress to tackle healthcare reform on a step-by-step basis, not take the comprehensive approach as embodied in the legislation that passed the House and Senate last year.
And only a few on the fringe are for the Democrat-preferred two-step approach:
Just 18.1 percent said they backed Democratic leaders’ preferred strategy of having the House pass the Senate bill alongside other legislation to modify it.
This puts the Republicans in a VERY strong position going into next week’s health reform summit at the Blair House. Let’s hope they don’t demonstrate their gift for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
