In today’s White House press briefing, Robert Gibbs spent a lot of time gratuitously discussing the history of reconciliation. But, when pressed to say if the White House was prepared to actually use the “nuclear option,� he crawfished. This irritated Helen Thomas:
Why can’t you say yes or no … Are you for reconciliation or not?
To which Gibbs provided the following answer:
The avenue exists if one wants to pursue it.
I think all this talk about reconciliation we’ve been hearing lately from the White House and congressional Democrats is a bluff meant to stampede the Republicans into making some stupid concession at Thursday’s health reform summit. GOP history suggests that it could work.
