Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak has apparently gummed up the works for Obama, Pelosi and their accomplices yet again:
Anti-abortion Democrat Bart Stupak of Michigan is asking for a vote on his language restricting taxpayer funding for abortion, and a group of female abortion rights Democrats came out of an emergency meeting in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office Friday evening visibly angry about the prospect.
Hmm … Maybe the pro-abortion members are “angry” because Madam Speaker isn’t quite there yet and has asked them to compromise with Stupak:
If — if — this is for real and not some elaborate kabuki designed to show Stupak et al. standing up for life as part of some phony deal before they cave, then it means she’s seriously worried that she doesn’t have the votes.
I guess we’ll know soon enough. What we do know already is that the language Stupak wants is totally unacceptable to the pro-abortion crowd:
Rep. Diana Degette, D-Colorado, told reporters a vote on Stupak’s measure was a ‘non starter’ and said ’somewhere between 40 and 55′ abortion rights Democrats would bolt from the bill…
I like the sound of that. Let’s hope Stupak does indeed constitute one last outpost of integrity in the Democrat Party. If so, he’s pretty lonely. His fellow Dems have been rolling over all day.
Stupak has called a press conference for tomorrow at 11am. If he announces a “compromise” that allows him to vote for the bill, it will mean this was all a charade.
