The term “principled Democrat” is obviously an oxymoron. In Bart Stupak’s case, we discover that his “principles” amounted to nothing more than a particularly stubborn insistance on some CYA narrative that he could give his constituents for the betrayal that he no doubt planned all along.
As it happens, he sold out for a particularly implausible fiction, an obviously unenforcable executive order that isn’t worth the paper it may or may not be written on. As Andy McCarthy points out, this is much like the Bush “signing statements” that the Dems whined about for eight years:
This particuar EO is also a nullity — presidents cannot enact laws, the Supreme Court has said they cannot impound funds that Congress allocates … so they can’t use executive orders to strike provisions in a bill. So this anti-abortion EO is blatant chicanery.
And McCarthy provides an mordant description of Stupak’s acquiescence in this chicanery:
If the pro-lifers purport to be satisfied by it, they are participating in a transparent fraud and selling out the pro-life cause.
And, make no mistake about it, Stupak and his accomplices KNOW it’s a fraud. These are not stupid people. They know perfectly well that, even if the executive order had any real meaning, Obama’s promise to sign it after the Senate bill has passed the House is worth no more than any of his other broken pledges.
So, needless to say, the first order of business for the voters of Stupak’s district is to give him the bum’s rush. Allahpundit provides the name of his opponent (Dan Benishek) as well as the address for his Facebook page. Replacing Judas Stupak will send a much needed message to his fellow roundheels.
