1994 VERSUS 2010

Are the Democrats really in as much trouble with the voters as they were in 1994? A quick comparison of Gallup’s generic ballot surveys from both years suggests that they probably are. The latest survey, which was done after Obamacare passed, shows the Dems at 44% while the GOP weighs in at 47%:

If that seems like a less-than-hair-raising margin, reflect on the fact that these surveys almost always overstate Democrat support among actual voters, then take a look at where the percentages sat in the months running up to their catastrophic losses in the 1994 midterms:

That’s right. The Dems were in slightly BETTER shape in March, 1994 than at present. Another datum that suggests the end is nigh can be found in the most recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, which shows public disapproval of Congress at 72%, precisely where that number sat in 1994.

Because Dem skulduggery on Obamacare demonstrated such contempt for the public, the voters are probably angrier at the Dems than they were 16 years ago. The big question involves the GOP. Will that famously “stupid” party get its act together enough to capitalize on voter discontent?

Let us pray.
