GOP Chairman Michael Steele recently brayed that Republicans have given African-Americans no reason to vote for them, and West points out that the remark was historically illiterate:
There is a great history connecting the Republican party to the black community and I think that Chairman Steele should do a little bit more research before he goes out spouting his mouth like that.
Among other things, he points out that the GOP was responsible for the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery) and the 15th Amendment (granting voting rights regardless of race, creed or color), both of which were opposed by the Dems.
