I presume you don’t know that lungs from smokers are used in the US too, David. If they weren’t there would be many more dying on a waiting list.
If it were you and you were told you faced certain death or lungs from a smoker, which would you choose? The facts are put well in this piece from a US transplant professional. As she says: “Putting a blanket exclusion on the lungs of smokers would mean approximately half as many people in America would receive a lung transplant.”
