Illegal immigration has very real implications for the cost of U.S. health care (although we don’t spend as much on undocumented aliens as most people think), so John Kyl’s assertion that President Obama wants to trade border security for immigration reform is of considerable interest to HCBS.
The White House says Senator Kyl is lying, of course. But Obama’s comments in this 2004 interview with Chicago Public Radio are consistent with Kyl’s representation of his conversation with the President. Here’s what Obama says in the interview about how to solve the immigration problem:
The trade off is going to have to be improved security of our borders at the same time allowing those who are already here to reach out for the American dream.
