BOWDLERIZING BYRD’S RECORD (PART II)

As I pointed out a couple of days ago, the MSM has been actively sanitizing Democrat Senator Robert Byrd’s sordid legacy of racism. This is not a huge surprise, but I must say I was taken aback to discover that the NAACP is also whitewashing the record of the old klansman:

The NAACP is saddened by the passing of United States Senator Robert Byrd … Senator Byrd went from being an active member of the KKK to a being a stalwart supporter of the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and many other pieces of seminal legislation that advanced the civil rights and liberties of our country.

Er … Senator Byrd was most emphatically not a “stalwart supporter” of these civil rights bills. In fact, he voted (and participated in filibusters) against them. In the face of such ignorance, Doug Powers provides a useful history lesson on the record of the Dems on the Civil Rights Act of 1964:

House of Representatives:
Democrats for: 152
Democrats against: 96
Republicans for: 138
Republicans against: 34

Senate:
Democrats for: 46
Democrats against: 21
Republicans for: 27
Republicans against: 6

For any progressive who might be reading this, this means that only 63% of the Dems voted for the bill, while 80% of the Republicans supported it. Which is what any historically literate reader would expect. The Dems were always the party of white supremacy, which is why they welcomed Robert Byrd.
