DR. BERWICK’S FAVORITE HEALTH SYSTEM

There are, of course, all kinds of reasons to be concerned about Obama’s newly installed CMS administrator, not least his notion of what a successful health care system looks like.

Berwick has, for example, made no secret of his great admiration for Great Britain’s NHS, and this should scare the daylights out of you. Here’s the latest on that “success” story:

A cash crisis in the NHS has left patients lying on the operating table before doctors realised vital equipment had not been ordered, according to a leaked report.

One can see why Berwick is impressed! And there’s more:

Women in labour have been forced to wait while epidural equipment was borrowed from other hospitals, while other patients have been denied chest drains and radiology supplies, according to doctors at South London Healthcare Trust.

One can see why Berwick wants to emulate that system, eh?

A separate letter sent to managers of the trust … says consultants have been misled into carrying out operations when it was not safe to go ahead because of bed shortages.

If this is the kind of system that Berwick “loves,” what sort of system does he condemn? You know the answer to this, of course. Berwick hates the U.S. health care system. He wants to lead it out of the “darkness of private enterprise” toward a healthcare system like the NHS.

What could go wrong?
