VIDEO: POLITICAL ATTACK ADS THEN & NOW

A perennial lament of the “news” media, when Republicans seem to be winning, is that the political system is broken and that it has been ruined by sinister interest groups running attack ads for the evil GOP.  Well, like so many memes repeated by the MSM, this one is BS.

In reality, political ads by interest groups have been a staple of democracy since classical times. Among the most interesting features of the ruins at Pompeii is the large number of such ads, including one that reads: “The petty thieves support Vatia for the aedileship.”

And, as to attack ads, ours are hopelessly tame compared the awful things the founding fathers said about one another. In fact, the Sally Hemings canard came out of one such campaign. Here’s a video providing a couple of juicy attacks from the Jefferson-Adams election:
