Remember that nice Christmas gift we got from Obama’s Medicare czar? Well, the Obama administration evidently couldn’t handle the heat it generated and took it back to the Returns Desk yesterday:

Reversing a potentially controversial decision, the Obama administration will drop references to end-of-life counseling from the ground rules for Medicare’s new annual checkup, a White House official said Wednesday.

In other words, Medicare will not be forcing doctors to  nudge Granny toward the graveyard during her annual check-up. This is a big set back for Donald Berwick, who apparently thought he could ignore the will of Congress.

Congress, you will recall, cut government-imposed end-of-life counseling out of the ObamaCare bill because everyone was raising so much Hell about it. But Berwick decided to reinstate it via regulatory fiat.

White House officials claimed they dropped it for “procedural reasons.” But, according to The Corner, the politics were just too hot. The Obots were afraid of getting back into the death panels debate.

Sarah Palin’s “death panel? charge clearly continues to spook the Obama administration … The general unpopularity of Obamacare has united conservatives and independents into a potential new political coalition that threatens to be the iceberg to the Obama administration’s Titanic.

So, Berwick has been brought to heel and the new GOP majority in the House will bring a repeal bill to a vote next Wednesday. With any luck, another Judge will strike down the individual mandate by the end of the month.

Get out the popcorn. Should be a good show.

I was surprised when the end-of-life stuff made it into Obamacare. DNRs, advanced directives, living wills and the like are the usual province of lawyers, not M.D.s

Sounds like the doctors wanted a cut of the action for themselves!

On a related note, of course Obamacare is pushing for Granny signing her living will / DNR years before she goes senile. Once the “medical official” says Granny’s gone off the trolley, off to hospice and a quick death for you! Saves Obamacare billions of $$$ in care *not* provided. Rather transparent, if you ask me.
