Since yesterday was Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday, it seemed appropriate to re-post this 1960s audio of the Gipper warning against Medicare mission creep. Here’s the money quote:
One of the traditional methods of imposing statism, or socialism, on a people has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project.
He correctly believed that, once the government got into health care, its influence would metastasize throughout the entire medical delivery system. And he was, of course right. Here’s the audio:
What strikes me when I listen to this again are his comments about the unwillingness of the voters to accept socialized medicine when it is presented to them as an honest choice.
If told the truth, the voters will reject it every time. That’s why ObamaCare had to be wrapped in the mantle of “reform.” When the voters discovered they’d been had, we got the midtern GOP tsunami.
