HHS CAVES ON OBAMACARE: STATES WILL DECIDE THE DEFINITION OF “ESSENTIAL CARE”

ObamaCare mandates that everyone will have access to “minimum essential coverage.” Most assumed this nebulous term would be defined by D.C. bureaucrats, but the Obama administration has decided to leave that up to the states.

In a major surprise on the politically charged new health care law, the Obama administration said Friday that it would not define a single uniform set of “essential health benefits? that must be provided by insurers for tens of millions of Americans. Instead, it will allow each state to specify the benefits within broad categories.

That has made our progressive friends very unhappy:

The Obama Administration has given up even the pretense of a competitive model for the state-administered private insurance exchanges … What Mr. Obama’s HHS has done in the hope of beating Mitt Romney is to facilitate the market’s ability to be less competitive and thus to raise prices.

Anything that upsets the jerks at Firedoglake can’t be all bad. They want Soviet-style central planning, but Obama wants to get reelected. So, the HHS has to make a minor concession to the Constitution:

By giving states the discretion to specify essential benefits, the Obama administration sought to deflect one of the most powerful arguments made by Republican critics of President Obama’s health care overhaul — that it was imposing a rigid, bureaucrat-controlled health system on Americans and threatening the quality of care.

Not exactly repeal, but a major victory for the good guys. And all because of the 2012 presidential race. Elections are a beautiful thing, are they not?

When one of your extended family members dies or loses everything they have because they did not have good healthcare coverage, you make sure you tell everyone in your extended family what a beautiful thing it is that has happened to that person.

More like a cautionary tale about what happens when you choose not to carry essential insurance. Choices have consequesces.
