So if I have a Christian Science Lawn Care business where I employ other Christian Scientist I don’t have to offer third party Health Care Insurance that covers drugs, surgery, or any other conventional treatments? The argument being that these treatments are against my religious beliefs and the government cannot compel me to offer this flavor of healthcare.

And if I have a Muslim Lawn Care business the government cannot require me to provide third party health insurance for treatments that are not approved by Sharia Law.

What about the rights of the individual and doctor to make healthcare decisions?

It’s interesting, Tony, that you use the Sharia example. As it happens, about three-quarters of the imams in mosques around the U.S. have declared their vehement objection to this rule.

The point you are missing is that the government has no constitutional authority to order Catholic organizations, Muslim organizations, or any other group to pay for health care services of any kind.

It’s an obvious violation of the First Amendment (you may have heard of it).

Diogenes – Do you think a ‘Catholic or Muslim organization’ should have to comply with any state or federal employment regulation?

Marc, I think the argument is:

“prohibiting the free excersize thereof” is in the first ammendment.

This cannot (or should not be able to) be overriden with anything other than another constitutional ammendment. The exception would be in the case of a belief violating common or natural law. i.e. killing, theft of property, etc.

Personally I think that employment regulation is far too invasive already. If one business is not hiring the most qualified people at the most appropriate rate, their competition will eat them alive. At least in a free market economy.
