During the congressional battle over ObamaCare, a number of allegedly anti-abortion Democrats said they would not vote for the bill because it authorizes the use of federal funds for abortion.
In the end, of course, they tossed their “principles” overboard and supplied the crucial votes that allowed it to pass. Among them was Pennsylvania congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper, who lost her seat for her trouble.
Dahlkemper, who is a Catholic, now says she wouldn’t have voted for PPACA if she had known HHS would require Catholic charities and hospitals to provide coverage of sterilization procedures and pills that induce early abortions:
I would have never voted for the final version of the bill if I expected the Obama Administration to force Catholic hospitals and Catholic Colleges and Universities to pay for contraception.
She goes on as follows:
We worked hard to prevent abortion funding in health care and to include clear conscience protections for those with moral objections to abortion and contraceptive devices that cause abortion.
Then she concludes with this howler:
I trust that the President will honor the commitment he made to those of us who supported final passage.
We discovered in March of 2010 that Dahlkemper is a woman of flexible principles. Now we know she’s an idiot. As most of the electorate now realizes, Obama honors no promise that proves inconvenient.
Thank God the voters had the good sense to fire her.
